Support - Dial-Up Configuration (Windows 3.1)

Note: Win 3.x or below is no longer supported. These directions are for reference only.  Having difficulties?  Read our Windows 3.1 Troubleshooting Tips.

System Requirements

Microsoft Internet Explorer is designed to work with Windows 3.x, but you must have the following:

  • A 80486 processor or higher

  • A minimum of 8 megabytes of Ram

  • 8 megabytes of hard disk space

  • A VGA Monitor or better

  • A mouse

  • A 14.4 baud or faster internal or external modem

Dialer Set Up

  • Connecting to your PPP account
    Double click on the Microsoft Internet Explorer Icon. A "Connect To" screen will appear, you'll need to enter your user name (not your real name) in the "User name" field. Remember to add a "P" (it must be a capital P) to the beginning of your user name. If your user name is johndoe, for example, it would look like this: Pjohndoe

    Enter your password in the "Password" field. You will have to enter your password each time you log in.

  • Call Waiting
    If you have call waiting, click the "Dial Settings" button, then put a check mark in the box that reads: "this location has call waiting." Add a*70,(the comma must be included) to the next box labeled: "To disable it dial:" If you don't turn off call waiting while you're connected, an incoming call will cut you off, disconnecting you from the Extreme Internet Server.

  • Connecting to Extreme Internet
    Next, you will need to choose the "Properties" option from your "Connect to" screen. Make sure the the "Bring Up Terminal Window After Dialing" is not checked and click OK to return to the "Connect to" screen.

    Now press the "Connect" button. When the connection is made (when the connection speed and duration are showing on your screen) you can minimize the "Connected to Extreme Internet" window and start surfing!

    Some of you will have the dialer window automatically minimize and just have your browser showing. The Microsoft Internet Browser will already be on the screen with the Windows Icon moving in the upper right corner. Your browser will be loading Extreme Internet's home page automatically.

Winsock Set Up

  1. Open the FILE menu on the TRUMPET WINSOCK by clicking once on it. Choose SETUP. In the dialog box which appears, make sure the following addresses are correct.

		*  IP Address		0.0.0.0

		*  Net Mask		255.255.255.0 (grayed out)

		*  Name Server		64.140.128.10

		*  Default Gateway	208.145.184.1 (grayed out)**

		*  Time Server		Leave Blank

**To change the Gateway, remove the the check mark for the Internal PPP. Once completed, make sure you replace the check mark.

Make sure that the Domain Suffix is "extremezone.com", and listed in lower case letters. Make sure the following elements are correct for a 14.4k and higher modems:

		*  MTU: 512	RWIN: 2048	MSS: 442

Make sure that Internal PPP is checked.
Everything else should be left to default.
Click OK and re-start your Trumpet Winsock.

  1. Editing the LOGIN.CMD

Since you'll be dialing a different number to connect, we need to edit the LOGIN.CMD script.

Click on the TRUMPET WINSOCK, click on the Dialer menu and choose EDIT SCRIPTS, then double-click on LOGIN.CMD and the script will appear in a NOTEPAD window.

Scroll down to about the middle of the screen, you should see something that reads: OUTPUT ATDT###-####\13

This is where you change the phone number to 368-4621.(make sure that only the number is changed)

Now, we need to change your username and password in the script.

Scroll down a little further and you should find the following: OUTPUT Pusername\13
Change 'username' only to your new Extreme Internet username.

Next, you should find the following:
#PASSWORD Enter your (provider) Password:
$p="password", change only the password.

Once completed, go to file a choose SAVE, then EXIT.
Note:
Some of you will have a different LOGIN SCRIPT that requires you to run SETUP.CMD, that changes the variables for you.

Click on the TRUMPET WINSOCK. Click on the DIALER menu and choose SETUP.CMD.

A dialog box will appear asking for your username. Enter your username (leave the capital "P"), click OK.

A password dialog box will appear, enter your new password. Click OK

A phone number dialog box will appear, enter 480-368-4621. Click OK.

A modem initialization box will appear, simply Click OK.

Your setup is complete.
You are now ready to to connect to Extreme Internet and start surfing the World Wide Web.

  1. To connect to Extreme Internet, click on Dialer from the menu bar.
    Choose Login.
    You should start hearing your modem dial.
    Next you should see the following:
