Scottsdale, AZ - Brandon
Fujimoto pitched 6 1/3 masterful innings and Bryan Lee got the
final two outs as Hawaii edged the Arizona team from Scottsdale 3-1. Kevin Higa scored on a wild pitch in the first after advancing to
third on a single by Lee. Arizona fought back with a run in the third to tie the
game. Fujimoto and his counterpart Durbin of the Scottsdale team traded quality
innings until the sixth when Hawaii went ahead for good on an RBI single by Roy Dunlap that scored Kellan Briones
from second. Briones had reached base after being hit by Durbin and advanced to
second on Adrian Mols second hit of the game. With runners
on first and second and Hawaii ahead by one run, Dunlap and Mols advanced on a double
steal. Hawaii coach Dickie Titcomb then called a squeeze play that scored Mols on
Lee's perfect bunt to the first baseman. Arizona made it interesting, loading the
bases in the seventh with one out. But Lee got Arizona to ground to Mols who threw
home to force the runner out at the plate. The final out came on a grounder to the
second baseman, Briones, who stepped on the bag to end the game. Hawaii will have a
day off on Wednesday and will play in the championship game on Thursday.
