Hawaii World Series Bound!
Defeats Anaheim in final game 6-3.
|
Scottsdale, AZ - For the
fifth time in six years, Hawaii will represent the West in Big League World Series
tournament play. Hawaii exploded for four runs in the fourth and added two more in
the sixth to take the final game of the Western regional tournament 6-3. Three days
after baffling Arizona batters, Brandon Fujimoto performed the
same magic on the mound scattering five hits and giving up three runs in going the
distance. Anaheim struck first in the fourth inning scoring one run off two hits.
But Hawaii returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning, and then some.
Kenji Takanishi led off the inning by slamming a
triple into the gap in right-center. Paki Lum followed by
sending a rocket over the left fielder's head for a double scoring Takanishi from third.
Jacob Flick singled sending Lum to third. Designated
hitter Jeremy Yoro hit into a double play that allowed Lum to
score from third putting Hawaii ahead 2-1. With two outs Kellan
Briones and Adrian Mols reach base on two consecutive errors
by Anaheim putting runners on first and second. A double steal put Briones and Mols
on third and second respectively. Still a one run ballgame and two outs on the
board, Roy Dunlap delivers a knockdown blow by lining a double
down the first base line that scored Briones and Mols and put Hawaii up 4-1.
The momentum
began to build. But to Anaheim's credit, they bounced right back in the top of the
fifth with two runs to make it a one-run game again. However, in the bottom of the
sixth Flick reached base on another error by Anaheim. Yoro singled sending Ryan Okano, running for Flick, to second. Briones layed down a
bunt but a good play by the pitcher Martinez forced Okano out at third leaving Kalvin Koverman, running for Yoro, at second and Briones at
first. While Dunlap delivered the knockdown blow in the fourth, Mols delivered the
knockout in the sixth. The Hawaii third baseman sent a screamer into the
right-center gap that scored Koverman and Briones leaving Mols standing on third with a
triple and Hawaii with a three run lead. It proved to be more than Fujimoto needed
to seal the victory as he retired the next three Anaheim batters in order. The Big
League World Series will be held in Tuscon, AZ. Hawaii will play Monday, Aug. 9 at
8:00pm PDT.
