Hawaii
Rally In The Seventh Tops Illinois 7-6
Jacob Flick's game-winning, two-run triple
highlights Hawaii comeback. |
Tucson, AZ - With two on and one out in the
bottom of the seventh, Jacob Flick lined a pitch down the right
field line that eluded a diving attempt by Illinois' right fielder giving Hawaii an
exciting 7-6 come-from-behind victory. Flick had another outstanding game going 3-4
with three RBI to go along with another solid game behind the plate.
Kukui Lucas, Adrien Williams, and Kyle Correa combined to allow just six hits while Hawaii pounded
out 14 of their own in their second game of Big League World Series play. After
spotting Illinois two runs in the top of the first, Bryan Lee
singled in the bottom half of the inning and advanced to second on Kenji Takanishi's grounder to first. Paki
Lum walked to put runners on first and second. Flick singled, scoring Lee, and
sending Lum to second. Lucas followed Flick with another single that scored Lum and
put Ryan Okano, running for Flick, on second. Okano
promptly stole third and scored on an errant throw by the catcher to give Hawaii a 3-2
lead. Hawaii added another run in the bottom of the fourth after Flick led off with
another single and Okano, running again for Flick, stole second. Kellan Briones smacked a shot into left center for a double
scoring Okano that stretched Hawaii's lead to two.
Illinois countered in the top of the fifth with two runs to tie the game
4-4 and then added two more in the top of the sixth to put them ahead 6-4. Hawaii
fought back with a run in the bottom of the sixth when Briones hit his second double of
the game, a bomb off the right field wall, and advanced to third on a grounder to the
shortstop by Adrian Mols. Roy Dunlap
connected for a single to right that brought in Briones from third to cut the lead to one.
Hawaii held Illinois scoreless in the top of the seventh as Correa came in relief
and neutralized the Illinois batters. Down a run entering their last at-bat, Hawaii
began their comeback ignited by a blast over the left fielder's head by Takanishi.
By the time Illinois retrieved the ball Takanishi was standing on second with one
out. Lum, the next batter, walked on a 3-2 count bringing up Flick for the game's
final heroics. With Okano on second running for Takanishi, and Lum on first, Flick
sent a line drive down the right field line. The Illinois right fielder made a mad
dash at the ball to try for the second out. But he couldn't quite get to it as the
ball rolled into the right field corner. Okano scored from second and Lum motored
all the way from first to score the winning run.
