Hawaii
Barrage Overpowers Tucson 11-5
Faces Florida Friday for U.S.
division championship
|
Tucson, AZ - A pair of
two-run doubles by Paki Lum and Kevin Higa
capped a six-run fifth that sealed a win for the Hawaii champions and put them in the U.S.
division championship game Friday night against Florida. Brandon
Fujimoto got the win and Adrien Williams closed to
earn the save as Hawaii improved their World Series record to 3-1. Their only loss
came from Florida earlier in the week.
Hawaii jumped ahead early with two runs in the first ignited by consecutive hits by the
leadoff batter Higa and first baseman Bryan Lee. Higa
advanced to third on a sacrifice fly to right by Kenji Takanishi.
Lum drove Higa in with a laser to the gap in right-center for a double that moved
Lee to third. Jacob Flick grounded out to short that scored
Lee to put Hawaii up 2-0. Hawaii added two more runs in the fourth after Flick led
off with a single and Kellan Briones walked putting Ryan Okano, running for Flick, on second. Adrian
Mols reached first on an error by the Tucson second baseman that scored Okano and
moved Briones to third. Right fielder Roy Dunlap knocked
Briones in with sacrifice fly to left to complete the scoring in the fourth to give Hawaii
a 4-0 lead.
The champions from Aiea, Halawa, and Kaimuki opened the game open as they exploded for six
runs on six hits in the fifth to stretch their lead to 10-0. Lee led off with his
second single of the game and advanced to second on a passed ball. Takanishi reached
first on an error by the shortstop putting Lee on third. Lum then torched his second
double into the gap in right-center that scored Lee and Takanishi. Another error by
the shortstop allowed Flick to reach first and moved Lum to third. Jeremy Yoro, batting for Kukui Lucas, hit a
grounder to the third baseman who caught Lum breaking for home. Kalvin Koverman, running
for Flick, moved to second. Mols singled, bringing Koverman home as Yoro reached second.
Mols and Yoro advanced on a passed ball and Yoro scored on a single by Dunlap
moving Mols to third. Higa then ripped a double down the left field line that scored
Mols and Dunlap putting Hawaii up by a seemingly insurmountable 10 run lead.
Tucson managed a run in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 10-2 ballgame.
Hawaii added another run in the seventh when Mols reached first on an error by the
shortstop and moved to second on the errant throw. Dunlap hit a short fly into right
that just escaped a diving Tucson right fielder. Mols scored on the play making it
an 11-2 game. Tucson gave it one last surge as they scored three runs in the seventh
to cut the lead to six. But the damage had already been done as Williams took over
on the mound for Fujimoto and got the last two outs on strikeouts to end the game.
